Course Description

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Omnibus Final Rule of 2013 brought about the most far-reaching changes to HIPAA since it was first enacted in 1996. The 2013 changes place significant regulatory compliance burdens on CPA firms providing accounting services to the health care sector when they have access to protected health information (PHI). This presentation will address the legal, regulatory and practical burdens and issues created for accountants and their firms by the Final Rule.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding how CPA firms that provide services to health care providers are affected by the new HIPAA/HITECH compliance requirements.

  • Promote awareness of compliance risks, stepped up enforcement initiatives and risks of non-compliance.

  • Highlight major components of new privacy, security and breach notification rules.

  • Explore possible safeguards, the importance of reviewing client relationships and ‘business associate’ agreements, how to limit access to PHI and suggested measures to secure electronic and paper records to maintain compliance with the new rule.
