In Fiscal Year 2016, the IRS assessed $27.3 billion in civil penalties. And, during the past 10 years, the IRS has increased its use of individual accuracy related penalties by almost 1,000%. This program will provide an overview of the various tax penalties that can be imposed, both on taxpayers and practitioners, the procedures that the Internal Revenue Service follows to assess penalties, and potential defenses.
